ECOCITY

ECOCITY is an urban non-profit organization, established in Athens in 2004. It later expanded to Thessaloniki and Patras.
 

Its function and organization are based on voluntary participation and contribution, with time and knowledge offered by its members, who are scientists and professors, state and public sector officials, local authorities representatives, NGO’s, journalists, as well as students and other citizens.ECOCITY is governed by a 5-member Board of Directors, elected by the General Assembly.

Mission & Vision

To establish standards and to ensure promotion and adoption of Environmental protection best practices in Greece.
 

To promote the notion of ecology and the need to protect the environment, both in the private and public sectors, as well as to enhance the adoption of environmentally-friendly best practices by the general public.
 

To create and maintain the necessary infrastructure, so that members of State, Local Authorities, professional Chambers, the Scientific Community and other Agencies and organizations, are able to interact with ECOCITY’s experts and members on matters related to the Environmental protection and the improvement of the quality of life in urban environment..

Focus Areas

Air: Environmental pollution in large cities.

 

Water: Management of water resources, use of fertilizers and pesticides, pollution of water bodies.

 

Urban living: Reconsideration of the construction of buildings. Enrichment of green areas in the urban environment. Recycling.

 

Energy: Revision of attitudes towards energy consumption.

 

 

Transportation: Adoption and advancement of environmentally-friendlyways of transportation, especially in modern cities.

ECOCITY Scientific Committee

The scientific committee of ECOCITY consists of specialists in their respective fields. Through aconsiderable number of events, actions and meetings, that take place each year, dialogue is promoted,  with the aim to well the dissipation of information on important subjects, which affect the Urban Environment (Fuel Adulteration, Pollution of Water Resources, City Traffic, Air Pollution etc.).

The Scientific Committee is comprised of a five-member administrative body in Athens and a three-member administrative body in Thessaloniki. Among other, the Scientific Committee engages on a regular basis in dialogue withthe Environmental Committee of the Greek Parliament, Local Committees, Consumer Organisations, as well as other discussion groups and committees.
